Japan Toray Industries plans to produce functional polypropylene (PP) long-fiber spunbond nonwovens in China. To this end, Dongli High-tech Polymerization (Nantong) Co., Ltd. (tentative name) was established, and a plant with a capacity of 18,000 t/a was prepared, and full-load production was planned in 2009 or later.
To this end, Toray High-tech (Nantong) Co., Ltd. decided to invest 3.7 billion yen (31.6 million US dollars) to build production facilities in Nantong in October 2006, and is scheduled to be completed and put into production in the second quarter of 2008. The unit uses advanced German technology to produce multi-layer nonwovens. This multi-layer nonwoven fabric is mainly used in sanitary products and medical equipment. The company's annual sales target is set at 5 billion yen.
After the completion of the new Nantong installation, plus the largest 49,000 t/a unit in Asia in Korea, the total capacity of the Dongli Industrial PP spunbond non-woven fabric unit will reach 67,000 t/a. In Asia, the demand for PP nonwovens is growing at an annual rate of about 20%, and China is close to 30%, mainly used as a paper diaper. In nonwovens, the demand for three or more layers of flexible spunbonded nonwovens in combination with melt blown nonwovens is growing. In order to further strengthen its position in China, Toray Industries also wants to increase investment in facilities with the goal of rapidly developing the Chinese market.
